Volkswagen Goes Viral… Again

Many of you undoubtedly remember the viral success of their last Star Wars-related commercial, which is approaching 50 million views as of this writing. Well, it looks like they’ve done it again. Volkswagen released a new Star Wars-related commercial yesterday, as a teaser for their upcoming Super Bowl commercial, this time featuring dogs barking the “Imperial March” song. The new video is nearing one million views, in its first day, on YouTube.

Going viral is no easy task, going viral more than once is exponentially more difficult. Deutsch, Inc., Volkswagen’s ad agency, found a way to marry cute and nostalgic in a completely awesome way.

A lot of people have tried to pinpoint exactly how and why certain media goes viral on the internet and many of them have very good points. Quite simply, going viral is a perfect storm of so many variables that it’s very nearly impossible to intentionally create (let alone re-create). But when those variables combine, they create content that can only be described as “holy crap, dude, you have to see this.”

The Volkswagen team at Deutsch, Inc. seems to be doubling-down on the success of their first iteration of Star Wars themed Super Bowl ads. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, right?

What does a bunch of cute dogs barking to the tune of the “Imperial March” have to do with Volkswagen cars and “German Engineering”? Well, nothing… but if it gets people to see the logo at the end of the commercial and share it with their friends then it doesn’t really matter, or does it? What do you think?
