UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging [Review]

First of all, I think it’s important to tell how I came about buying this book.

I had just finished reading a couple of books I had ordered from Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks ago and decided to ask my friends on Twitter for some suggestions on good social media books. Within the hour, I had a response from @FinestBooks, suggesting that I try out Scott Stratten’s book UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging. (Amazon Affiliate Link).

@FinestBooks is a Twitter account run by Amazon representatives. I decided to take them up on their suggestion and ordered the book, along with Engage by Brian Solis, from Amazon (yes, they converted me).

I got the book in a few days later and started reading it immediately.

To say that Stratten hits the proverbial nail on the head would be doing his book a great injustice.

Not only does Scott talk about different strategies that companies have successfully employed in social media, but also gives insight as to why those strategies worked.

He gives example after example of how to effectively position you or your business as an expert in your chosen field.

One of my favorite things about the book, as a whole, is his writing style. He pulls off a very friendly, casual tone throughout the book that is highlighted by his hilarious footnotes.

The lessons you can take from UnMarketing, but one of the most important ones, in my opinion, is that being unprepared for success is worse than never having success. Ensuring that your company employs a social media strategy that is scalable is extremely important.

If you’re a business owner and you’re wondering how to effectively promote your business, I highly recommend picking up a copy of UnMarketing. Stop Marketing. Start Engaging.
